Why modern switchboards are split into zones on purpose

A properly set up switchboard doesn't run every circuit in the house off one safety switch. It's split into two, sometimes three, separate RCD zones, so a fault on one, say the kitchen circuit tripping from a faulty appliance, doesn't take out the bedrooms and the rest of the house with it. This is deliberate design, not a flaw, and it's exactly why you can lose power to half the house while the other half runs completely normally.

Older boards, or boards that have never been upgraded, sometimes run the whole house off a single safety switch, which means one fault takes everything out at once.

What to check before you call

Open the switchboard and look for a safety switch or breaker sitting in a different position to the others, most trip to a middle position rather than fully off. If you find one, that's your answer, and you've likely also got a faulty appliance or a fault on that circuit worth identifying before resetting it. Unplug anything recently plugged in on that side of the house first.

When it's more serious than a tripped switch

If every switch and breaker at the board looks normal, in the on position, but part of the house still has no power, that's a different problem entirely. This can point to a loose or damaged neutral connection, either at the switchboard or further back at the street connection, which is a genuine safety issue, not a simple reset. It can also cause voltage fluctuations on the circuits that are still working, sometimes damaging appliances on those circuits.
