The everyday signs most homeowners ignore
Lights dimming slightly when the air conditioner or the oven kicks in is the one people brush off most often. It's not normal, it means the board is under more load than it's comfortably handling. Same goes for a breaker that trips once every few weeks when two appliances run together, that's the board telling you it's near its limit, not a one-off glitch.
If your switchboard still has round ceramic fuses instead of modern circuit breakers, that alone is a strong sign it predates current safety standards, including RCD protection. Why adding an EV charger, solar, or a battery pushes old boards over the edge
A board that's coped fine for years can hit its limit the moment you add a genuinely high-draw device. An EV charger, a home battery, an induction cooktop, or a second reverse cycle system all need dedicated circuit capacity most boards built before the mid 2000s simply weren't sized for. What happens if you wait
Nothing, until it doesn't. An overloaded or ageing board doesn't fail gradually and predictably, it runs fine until a connection finally fails or overheats, and at that point it's an emergency, not a booking.
