What "dedicated circuit" actually means

A dedicated circuit runs from the switchboard directly to the charger and nothing else. No power points branching off it, no other appliances sharing the breaker. This matters because an EV charger draws a sustained, high current load for hours at a time, very different from a power point that briefly runs a kettle or a phone charger.

Why sharing a circuit isn't just against the rules, it's genuinely risky

A shared circuit sized for general household use isn't rated to carry an EV charger's sustained draw alongside anything else plugged into the same run. That combination is exactly what causes overheating in cabling and connections over time, often well before it trips a breaker or shows any obvious warning sign. The dedicated circuit requirement exists because this specific failure mode is well understood, not as a box-ticking exercise.

What this means for your switchboard

Every EV charger installation needs a spare circuit position at the switchboard, plus capacity for the added load. This is why an EV charger quote should always start with a look at your existing board, not just a price for running cable to the parking spot. If there's no spare position or the board's near capacity, the circuit requirement is what turns an EV charger job into a switchboard job.

This is also why a genuine quote for an EV charger installation should never be given over the phone without at least some questions about your switchboard's age and current circuit count, since that's what actually determines whether the job is straightforward or needs additional work first.

What a compliant EV charger circuit actually includes

A properly installed circuit includes cable sized specifically for the charger's rating and the distance from the switchboard, its own circuit breaker, and its own RCD, separate from the RCDs protecting the rest of the home. Once it's in, you get a compliance certificate confirming the work meets current wiring rules, which matters for insurance and for resale down the track.
